Do you know that batteries are not maintenance free and need TLC just as your engine does?  Everyone should be aware and understand best practices for operation and care of your marine batteries.  Here are a few tips.

Battery Safety:

  • Maintain good ventilation when working on or charging batteries.
  • Always wear proper protective gear when working on batteries.
  • Never tip batteries past a 45 degree angle.
  • Keep vent caps tight and level.

Care and Maintenance:

  •  Keep battery covers, containers and terminals clean, dry and free of corrosion.  Be sure the vent caps are always secured to the     battery.
  • Only use biodegradable clean-neutralizer solutions.
  • You can use a solution of baking soda and water to clean if any battery electrolyte is spilled.
  • Inspect cables and terminal connection

Other tips:

  • A lead acid battery requires checking of water level, topping water level off with distilled water, cleaning battery posts and connections, and keeping them charged often.
  • The charger in the boat is not enough to recover a battery that has been sitting for a period of time or recover a dead battery. A higher amp charge is required to do that for several hours.
